Cat Multivitamins: What Indoor Cats Actually Need (and What They Don't)

Most cat multivitamins on the market are built for a problem most indoor cats do not have: generalised deficiency. A cat eating a complete commercial diet is already getting the basics. So the question is not “should I add a multivitamin?” but “what is actually missing in my cat’s week?” Here is how to answer that.

Quick answer

  • If your cat eats a complete diet: a broad multivitamin is usually redundant. Targeted support is more useful.
  • Most commonly useful for indoor cats: taurine (already in complete food), omega-3s, B vitamins, and fibre for hairballs.
  • What to avoid: high-dose iron, high-dose vitamin A, and any product that hides amounts in a “blend”.
  • What it is not: a replacement for proper food, or a treatment for illness.

What indoor cats actually tend to lack

Not vitamins, in most cases — variety and activity. Indoor cats get less sunlight, less hunting-style enrichment, and often eat the same food every day. The practical gaps are:

  • Hydration — the single biggest one. Wet food or added water matters more than any pill.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids — for coat and skin, and often low in dry-only diets.
  • Fibre — for hairball movement in long-haired cats.
  • B vitamins — can run low in cats with GI issues or on long-term medication.

How to read a cat multivitamin label

Look for Why
Amounts per serving, in mg or IU Without numbers you cannot compare two products or judge if a dose is sensible.
Serving size matched to your cat’s weight “One chew for all cats” means a 7 lb cat and a 16 lb cat get the same dose.
Palatability you can verify Cats are the hardest species to supplement. A product your cat refuses is worth zero.
No megadose vitamin A or iron Both are toxic in excess, and both appear in cheap multivitamins marketed as “complete”.

Chews, powder or drops?

Chews work if your cat genuinely eats them — many do not, and a refused chew gives you no information about intake. Powder mixed into wet food is the most reliable for cats who eat wet food consistently. Drops are precise and easy to hide in a small amount of food, which is why liquids are common for cats specifically.

What a multivitamin will not fix

It will not fix dehydration, obesity, dental disease, or a cat that is vomiting or losing weight. Those need a vet and a change of routine — not another supplement.

FAQ

Do indoor cats need a multivitamin at all? Many do not, if they eat a complete diet. It is most useful as targeted support: coat, hairball, senior or post-illness recovery.

Can I combine it with other supplements? Yes, but watch for overlap — two products both containing vitamin A or zinc can add up. Tell your vet what your cat takes.

Are chews or drops better for cats? Drops or powder mixed into wet food are usually more reliable; chews depend entirely on whether your cat accepts them.

Is it safe long-term? For a balanced product at label dose, generally yes. Avoid long-term high-dose vitamins A, D and iron without veterinary supervision.

When to call your vet instead

Contact your vet if your cat stops eating, loses weight, vomits repeatedly, has diarrhoea lasting more than two days, or shows any sudden behaviour change.
