Dog Itching & Skin Allergy Symptom Guide

Itching can follow environmental allergies, fleas or mites, food reactions, dry skin, or secondary yeast and bacterial overgrowth. The location, timing, odor, and condition of the skin help narrow the pattern, but persistent itching needs veterinary evaluation.

Paws contact grass, pollen, cleaners, salt, and moisture. Allergies can start the itch cycle, while damp skin between the toes can allow yeast to overgrow. Persistent licking, swelling, limping, odor, or open skin should be checked by a veterinarian.

Recurring ear odor or debris can reflect inflammation, trapped moisture, yeast, or bacteria. Allergies can make the ear canal more vulnerable. Repeated cleaning alone does not identify the cause, and painful or smelly ears need veterinary examination.

Food reactions can cause year-round itching, but they are less common than environmental allergies and cannot be confirmed by casual food switching. A veterinary-guided elimination diet and controlled food challenge are normally needed.
