STOP 1 · AIR ENTERS
Nose and Nasal Passages
The nostrils and nasal passages help filter, warm, and humidify inhaled air. The nose also contains scent receptors, so airflow and smell are closely connected for dogs.
What owners may notice: A resting dog often breathes quietly through the nose. Persistent discharge, repeated sneezing, obvious obstruction, or new noisy airflow deserves veterinary guidance.
STOP 2 · AIRWAY ENTRANCE
Pharynx and Larynx
The pharynx is a shared passage behind the nose and mouth. The larynx, or voice box, opens for airflow into the trachea and helps protect the airway during swallowing.
What owners may notice: Voice changes, harsh inhalation sounds, repeated gagging, or difficulty swallowing can involve this region but cannot be diagnosed from sound alone.
STOP 3 · THE WINDPIPE
Trachea
The trachea is supported by cartilage rings that help keep the airway open. It runs down the neck and divides into the right and left main bronchi.
What owners may notice: A cough can be triggered when the trachea or branching airways sense irritation. A cough does not identify which structure or condition is responsible.
STOP 4 · BRANCHING AIRWAYS
Bronchi and Bronchioles
Inside the lungs, the bronchi divide repeatedly into smaller bronchioles. This branching network distributes air through the lung tissue.
What owners may notice: Wheezing, persistent coughing, reduced exercise tolerance, or faster breathing may indicate airway or lung involvement and should be discussed with a veterinarian.
STOP 5 · GAS EXCHANGE
Alveoli
Alveoli are microscopic air sacs surrounded by tiny blood vessels. Oxygen crosses into the blood while carbon dioxide moves into the alveoli to be exhaled.
What owners may notice: Gas exchange cannot be assessed just by listening. Blue or gray gums, marked breathing effort, weakness, or collapse require emergency care.
STOP 6 · OXYGEN DELIVERY
Bloodstream and Body
The blood carries oxygen from the lungs to organs and muscles. Carbon dioxide produced by the body's cells returns through the blood to the lungs and leaves with the next exhalation.
